The latest: Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is ready to respond to Tropical Storm Isaias as the system strengthens and approaches the Florida Panhandle.

Why it matters: Tropical Storm Isaias has the potential to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, significant storm surge and possible tornadoes to the Florida Panhandle. It also has the potential to cause power outages throughout the region. FPL urges customers to review their family and business emergency plans, monitor the storm’s development and follow the advice of local, state and federal elected officials.

A word from FPL president and CEO Scott Bores:

“At FPL, we are moving crews and resources in advance of Tropical Storm Isaias so we can respond immediately and quickly restore power for our customers. We’re prepared and ready to respond. We urge our customers to prepare, too. Please take this time to review your emergency plans, closely monitor the storm and follow guidance from local and state officials.”

What FPL is doing:

  • Pre-positioning personnel for rapid restoration.
  • Coordinating closely with local emergency management officials.
  • Securing additional restoration personnel from other utilities and electrical contracting companies.
  • Monitoring the system around the clock.

What customers should do now:

  • Take time to review family and business emergency plans.
  • Follow the advice of federal, state and local authorities.

 Preparation and safety

  • If someone in your home is dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment, review your family emergency plan for back-up power or make arrangements to relocate now.
  • If you plan to use a ladder while preparing your home for the storm, note the location of power lines before you begin. Be sure that ladders or scaffolds are far enough away so that you – and the tools you’re using – stay at least 10 feet away from power lines. Before lowering a TV antenna or satellite dish, make sure to turn off and unplug the TV.
  • Adjust refrigerators and freezers to their coldest settings ahead of time to keep food fresher longer in the event of a power outage.
  • Avoid trimming trees now, as high winds can turn cut branches into dangerous, flying debris. Help prevent outages by tying down or securing loose branches or other debris.
