JUNO BEACH, Fla. – The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) has honored Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) with its Emergency Response Award for the company’s efforts to help other utilities recover following Hurricane Helene and Winter Storm Enzo.

FPL’s response to Hurricane Helene and Winter Storm Enzo:

Hurricane Helene: A Category 4 hurricane that made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region in September 2024 and brought widespread damage throughout the Southeast. FPL responded swiftly to Helene, restoring power to its impacted customers in a matter of days. After restoring power to customers, FPL committed hundreds of employees and contractors to provide comprehensive assistance for recovery efforts in Georgia — deploying specialized crews for critical infrastructure recovery and management teams for logistics, coordination and operations support. Despite facing some of the most challenging post-storm environments in recent history, FPL teams demonstrated exceptional adaptability and technical expertise while courageously navigating hazardous conditions to assist other utilities and restore power to more than 1 million Georgia homes and businesses impacted by Helene.

Winter Storm Enzo: A historic winter storm that brought unprecedented snow, ice and blizzard conditions to much of the U.S. Gulf Coast in January 2025. FPL demonstrated its commitment to serving Northwest Florida customers affected by the rare storm, restoring power quickly while also providing mutual assistance and resources to support restoration efforts in Texas.

A word from FPL President and CEO Armando Pimentel: “This recognition reflects the exceptional dedication of our emergency response team and our unwavering commitment to mutual assistance. We’re grateful for the support we've received during past storms, and we always stand ready to support our partner utilities when they face similar challenges. We have entered the peak of hurricane season, and we remain prepared to serve our customers and assist our peer utilities when severe weather strikes.”

A word from EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney:  “America’s electric companies and their dedicated workforces work tirelessly throughout the year to strengthen the energy grid and to restore power — and peace of mind — for American families and businesses after extreme weather events and natural disasters. Florida Power & Light showcased true leadership when it stepped in to lend critical support to neighboring electric companies in their times of need —underscoring the importance of our industry’s mutual assistance network. These assistance awards reflect FPL and its storm response team’s incredible commitment to the customers and communities they serve.”

For perspective: This is the 23rd time FPL has been recognized by EEI for recovery and assistance efforts following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events.

Go deeper: Presented to EEI member companies twice a year, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events.
