JUNO BEACH, Fla. – The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) has honored Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) with its Emergency Response Award for the company’s efforts to restore power to customers in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia.

Why it matters: Hurricane Idalia, a category three storm, brought devastating winds, significant flooding and storm surge across North and Southwest Florida as it sliced through the state in late August 2023. FPL’s restoration workforce of 12,000 men and women from Florida and 16 other states worked around the clock to restore electricity to nearly 200,000 customers.

FPL completed restoration within two days of the devastating storm exiting Florida. The company’s smart grid technology avoided nearly 70,000 outages.

A word from FPL President and CEO Armando Pimentel: “Hurricane Idalia had a devastating impact on many Floridians, and we dedicated ourselves to helping our customers get back to a sense of normalcy after the storm. I couldn’t be prouder of the commitment of our employees and all first responders. Their adaptability and initiative throughout that challenging restoration was remarkable and inspiring, and this award is a testament to that.”

A word from EEI President and CEO Dan Brouillette: “America’s electric companies are committed to serving their customers and communities and to restoring power safely and as quickly as possible following severe storms and other extreme weather events. I applaud Florida Power & Light’s commitment to restoring service under challenging conditions following Hurricane Idalia. I am honored to present FPL and its storm response team with this well-earned recovery award.”

For perspective: This is the 22nd time FPL has been recognized by EEI for recovery and assistance efforts following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events.

Go deeper: Presented to EEI member companies twice a year, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s winter Board of Directors and CEO meeting.
