JUNO BEACH, Fla — Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) matched its best reliability performance on record in 2025 and achieved the lowest outage frequency in company history, according to its Annual Distribution Reliability Report filed with the Florida Public Service Commission.

Smart grid technology makes a difference: FPL’s investments in intelligent devices, such as automated switches, are delivering results for its customers — avoiding outages and enabling faster restoration when they do occur. Since 2011, these devices have helped avoid more than 17 million customer interruptions – including more than 1.6 million in 2025 alone — contributing to the lowest-ever frequency of outages on record.

Why it matters: Today, FPL operates one of the strongest, smartest and most storm-resilient electric grids in the country. With reliability that’s approximately 67% better than the national average, the company’s transmission and distribution system maintains top-decile performance, serving customers with reliable electricity during good weather and bad.

A word from Armando Pimentel, FPL CEO: “Our team is relentlessly focused on providing excellent reliability for our customers and our latest data shows how grid enhancements are benefiting our customers. Fewer outages mean fewer disruptions for families, businesses and critical community services – supporting Florida’s continued growth by providing reliable power every single day, all while keeping customer bills as low as possible.”

Grid strengthening continues: From infrastructure to technology, FPL customers will continue to see new enhancements to the electric grid this year and for years to come. Currently, the strength of FPL’s electric grid features:

  • 85% of FPL’s main power lines are hardened with stronger, overhead structures or have been moved underground.
  • 97% of FPL's transmission structures are steel or concrete.
  • Nearly 2,000 miles of overhead neighborhood power lines are now underground through FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Program.
  • Approximately 17,500 miles of overhead distribution lines are cleared of trees and other vegetation each year.
