Smart investments and continued operational efficiencies help keep customer bills low while strengthening reliability
JUNO BEACH, Fla., Oct. 30, 2026 – Florida Power & Light Company today announced that typical residential customer bills in 2027 will be lower than the company projected last year and are expected to remain well below the national average.
Under proposals filed today with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), the typical 1,000-kWh residential customer bill would be $141.87 beginning in January 2027, lower than the $143.05 FPL projected for 2027 in PSC filings last year. FPL bills are also expected to remain the lowest among Florida’s major utilities.
The lower projection reflects FPL’s continued focus on delivering value for customers through smart long-term investments, disciplined operations and a modern, fuel-efficient generation fleet, along with lower projected natural gas costs. Together, those savings are expected to help offset a proposed temporary surcharge to recover the costs of restoring power after Hurricane Isaias and partially replenish FPL’s storm reserve.
Keeping bills lower than projected: FPL is asking the PSC to reduce the fuel charge on customer bills to reflect lower projected natural gas costs. That reduction, together with operational efficiencies and other annual cost-recovery adjustments, would keep the typical residential bill below the amount projected last year, even with previously approved base rate adjustments and the proposed storm surcharge.
Recovering Hurricane Isaias restoration costs: FPL is asking the PSC to approve a temporary surcharge of $3.48 a month for a typical 1,000-kWh residential customer from January through December 2027. The surcharge would recover the cost of restoring power after Hurricane Isaias and partially replenish the storm reserve depleted by the destructive hurricane.
Investments performed when customers needed them most: Isaias made landfall in Okaloosa County as a Category 2 hurricane on Oct. 9. About 435,000 customers – 84% of those served by FPL in Northwest Florida – experienced outages. FPL mobilized approximately 17,000 workers and restored power to essentially all customers within four days.
FPL’s investments in smart-grid technology helped avoid approximately 138,000 outages during the hurricane. Underground neighborhood power lines performed about 14 times better than overhead lines and FPL’s ongoing forensic investigation has not identified a single hardened pole that failed during Isaias.
Those results reflect FPL’s long-term approach to serving customers: plan ahead to make smart investments, operate the system efficiently, and use improved performance to deliver better reliability and lower costs. FPL’s investments in modern, fuel-efficient power generation are reducing fuel consumption and customers’ exposure to volatile fuel prices, while its investments in storm hardening and smart-grid technology are reducing outages and accelerating restoration.
A word from FPL President and CEO Scott Bores: “Our responsibility is to deliver reliable power while keeping customer bills as low as possible. That means planning ahead, making smart investments and operating efficiently every day. During Hurricane Isaias, those investments helped prevent outages and restore power faster. Now, our modern generation fleet and continued focus on efficiency are helping keep 2027 bills lower than we projected last year, even as we recover the cost of responding to the hurricane. That is what customer-focused performance looks like: stronger reliability and bills that remain well below the national average.”
FPL 2027 bill projections: The proposed temporary storm surcharge would take effect in January 2027 alongside previously approved base rate adjustments and annual adjustments to the fuel charge and other cost-recovery clauses, all subject to PSC review and approval.
