The latest: Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is making final preparations to respond immediately when Hurricane Isaias affects its customers.

Why it matters: Hurricane Isaias is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, significant storm surge and tornadoes to the Florida Panhandle. It also has the potential to cause power outages throughout the region. FPL urges customers to finalize their family and business emergency plans, monitor the storm’s development and follow the advice of local, state and federal elected officials.

A word from FPL president and CEO Scott Bores: “We know that our customers are counting on us. We are gathering a restoration workforce of 12,000 men and women, and pre-positioning supplies and equipment. Rest assured, FPL is ready and we want you to be ready too. Now is the time to finalize preparations for you and your family.”

What FPL is doing:

  • Pre-positioning a restoration workforce of approximately 12,000 and finalizing 16 processing and staging sites. This will help speed restoration closest to areas likely to feel the greatest impact.
  • Communicating with customers in multiple ways, including automated calls and text messages.
  • Monitoring the system around the clock.

What customers should do now:

  • Finalize emergency plans and preparations.
  • Focus on safety and heed the warnings of emergency officials.

Preparation and safety

  • Don’t trim trees around your home immediately before a storm – high winds can turn branches into dangerous, flying debris.
  • Customers dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment should finalize their family emergency plan for backup power or make plans to relocate.
