The latest: The National Hurricane Center has issued advisories for Potential Tropical Cyclone 4, as well as tropical storm warnings and watches for parts of Florida’s west coast. Florida Power & Light Company is ready to respond and is assembling a restoration workforce, including employees, contractors and assistance from out of state. FPL will preposition crews and resources at staging sites so they can respond safely and as quickly as possible. With the potential of severe weather impacting parts of Florida, FPL urges its customers to prepare for possible widespread, extended power outages.
Why it matters: This storm could be Florida’s first for the 2024 hurricane season. While the exact track and intensity are still uncertain, the current forecast includes strong wind, heavy rainfall and potential storm surge across parts of the state throughout the weekend. Severe weather conditions can create flooding and blow trees and vegetation into powerlines, creating power outages.

What customers should do before the storm:
- Safety is always FPL’s first priority. Customers should make it their top priority as they finalize their personal preparations.
- Don’t trim trees – high winds can turn branches into dangerous, flying debris.
- Follow the advice of federal, state and local authorities. This is especially important for people living in low-lying areas and manufactured homes who may face additional challenges during a severe weather event.
- Customers dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment, should finalize their family emergency plan for backup power.
