JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company’s workforce of more than 850 FPL employees and contractors returned home over the weekend after assisting Entergy Louisiana and Cleco in their power restoration efforts following Hurricane Delta. The company’s dedicated men and women worked 16-hour days in challenging conditions to restore service to 6,000 homes and businesses.
Hurricane Delta marks the fourth time this year that FPL employees and contractors have assisted in restoring power to areas devastated by hurricanes.
“This unprecedented hurricane season has been a stark reminder of how we must all prepare for whatever Mother Nature may throw our way,” said FPL President and CEO Eric Silagy. “As Floridians we know how difficult life can be without power, and it’s why we are happy to work alongside our industry partners to get the lights back on following powerful storms, such as Hurricane Delta, the same way they help us following storms. Before making the decision to send help, FPL makes sure its customers are taken care of and that no other storms are on the immediate horizon.
Providing mutual assistance after natural disasters is a hallmark of the energy industry. In the past, FPL has provided assistance to areas impacted by major weather events, including this highly active hurricane season. Prior to Hurricane Delta deployment, FPL sent 600 employees and contractors to central New Jersey after Hurricane Isaias. After that, FPL’s workforce of more than 1,300 employees and contractors returned to Florida from Texas and Louisiana after rebuilding the energy grid damaged by Hurricane Laura. In addition to sending workers to help other utilities, FPL sent more than 180 semi-tractor trailers to Lake Charles, La. loaded with steel poles and other critical equipment to help rebuild parts of the transmission grid, which is essential to bringing power to communities. And then again following Hurricane Sally, more than 2,400 FPL employees and contractors assisted sister company, Gulf Power, to restore power in the Florida Panhandle.
