JUNO Beach, Fla. — Long before becoming president and CEO of the nation’s largest electric utility, Scott Bores built his leadership foundation at home.
As a father of four, he understands the importance of balance, resilience and showing up consistently. Weekends are often spent on the sidelines of sporting events, cheering on his kids and being present for the moments that matter most.
Balancing those responsibilities with the demands of leading Florida Power & Light isn’t always easy. But he credits his wife – “a rockstar” – with helping their family navigate it all.
It’s a perspective he’s carried into how he leads the FPL team. Bores was named president late last year and accepted the CEO role in mid-May.
“At the end of the day, everything we do is for our customers,” Bores says. “All of our employees are committed to those customers. We try to get better every day because we know it’ll benefit them.”
That focus on customers is closely tied to another priority: people.
“The people have really kept me at FPL,” Bores explains. “This is a tremendous team that every day strives to be better for our customers.”
Since taking over the reins for FPL, Bores has worked to stay closely connected with the FPL team – spending time in the field and building relationships across the company. It’s a leadership style grounded in presence, listening and collaboration.
Bores joined FPL in 2011 and has held a range of financial leadership roles, most recently serving as vice president of finance.
Throughout his tenure, he has played a key role in FPL’s regulatory process, serving as a witness numerous times at the Florida Public Service Commission. Those experiences helped shape his approach to leadership under pressure.
“There is nothing more important than being composed when you’re under heat,” he says.
He pairs that composure with an emphasis on taking in multiple perspectives.
“I’ve learned to be very patient, listening to my team before jumping to a decision,” he says.
Beyond his professional experience, Bores’ leadership has been shaped by personal challenges as well.
At age 25, he was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That experience, he says, strengthened his resilience and outlook.
“It was tough, but it’s all about the mental stability and the fight. It taught me the importance of being resilient, taking feedback and getting better for those around you.”
It’s a mindset that continues to influence how he leads today, centered around continuous improvement and long-term perspective.
“I’m really focused on the next ten years and all that we can accomplish,” Bores says. “I think we’re in the perfect spot to really, truly improve Florida as the best state in the nation.”
He also credits the leaders who have shaped his approach along the way.
“I’ve been fortunate to have some tremendous leaders, and I’ve learned a lot of great and unique things from each one,” Bores says.
Among them is NextEra Energy Vice Chairman Armando Pimentel.
“[Armando and I] both deeply care about people, deeply care about building teams and really care about doing what’s best for our customers,” he says.
For Bores, that connection between people, purpose and performance is what drives results.
At FPL, he leads the way he lives: by showing up, supporting others and delivering for customers.
