FPL Home Energy Makeovers help Holly Hill families save energy and money
January 23, 2012

In partnership with the City of Holly Hill, Florida Power & Light Company today provided 50 local families with free Home Energy Makeovers. FPL experts installed energy-efficient upgrades to help residents save money and lessen their impact on the environment by reducing energy consumption. The upgrades occurred before Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer when warmer temperatures can affect energy bills.

Approximately 50 energy experts from FPL and employee volunteers from the City of Holly Hill  traveled through neighborhoods to deliver the energy-efficiency upgrades, which are expected to save these FPL customers, many of whom are senior citizens living on fixed incomes, as much as 25 percent on their utility bills.

Since 2006, FPL has installed extensive energy-efficiency upgrades in 750 homes through the company's Home Energy Makeover program. The program is collectively saving the participants an estimated $140,000 each year.

“FPL is proud to partner with the City of Holly Hill to educate residents on how to reduce their energy use and save on their monthly expenses,” said Larry Volenec, FPL’s external affairs manager. “Our energy-makeover teams shared tips and advice on easy, low-cost improvements that can benefit all families, as well as ways to conserve energy while staying cool during the warm summer months. FPL customers have the lowest electric bills in the state, and these tips will help them continue to save.”

City officials, including City of Holly Hill Mayor Roy Johnson, joined FPL volunteers and helped out with energy-efficient upgrades as part of the Home Energy Makeover team.

“Our partnership with FPL gives residents of Holly Hill access to the tools and information they need to learn to conserve energy, save money and make a positive impact on their daily lives,” Mayor Johnson said. “The Home Energy Makeover is a great way for Holly Hill residents to kick-off the summer with savings.”

A total of 12 Home Energy Makeover teams visited homes of pre-qualified customers to install upgrades and educate homeowners about ways to reduce their energy usage. Upgrades included:

·       Repairing air conditioning ducts

·       Checking and installing insulation

·       Installing lifetime air conditioning filters

·       Installing compact fluorescent lights

·       Inserting refrigerator and freezer thermometers

·       Installing weather stripping

·       Installing water-saving showerheads and faucets

Most of these energy-efficiency upgrades can be adopted by any FPL customer looking to make smarter, cleaner energy choices.
