Myth: “When my computer is off, it isn’t using electricity.”
Fact: In reality, computers, TVs, DVD players, DVRs, stereos and even cell phone chargers continue to draw power even when they are not in use. There are two easy ways to save energy by preventing these so-called “phantom” loads: 1) unplug electronics when not in use or 2) plug devices into a power strip that you can turn off. A word of caution: shutting off some of these items may require you to reprogram certain functions when you turn them back on so check your owner’s manual to be sure.
