FPL to issue request for proposals for renewable generation
March 26, 2008

Juno Beach, Fla.—Florida Power & Light Company today announced it will issue a request for proposals (RFP) to identify and select new renewable generation sources that will help the company reduce emissions, enhance its fuel diversity, and maintain system reliability while providing cost-effective purchased power to its customers. Since FPL issued a similar RFP last year, a ruling by the Florida Public Service Commission concerning the Manatee landfill gas contract rendered previous bids unviable. The company is now seeking new proposals that comply with the Commission’s ruling.

FPL is seeking proposals on both firm generating capacity and energy. FPL today buys 157 megawatts of firm capacity and approximately 1.5 million MWH of energy from renewable energy producers under both firm and as-available contracts.

FPL will release its RFP in early April 2008 with a pre-proposal workshop planned for late April.  Proposals will be due on June 9, 2008, and a short list of vendors will be compiled by September.  More information about the RFP can be obtained by contacting Raul Montenegro at 305-552-3632 or at Raul_Montenegro@fpl.com

RFP solicits renewable energy proposals

The company welcomes proposals that use a variety of renewable energy sources, including biomass, waste-to-energy, landfill gas, solar, geothermal, wind, ocean current, hydroelectric, waste heat from a commercial or industrial manufacturing process and hydrogen produced from sources other than fossil fuel. FPL prefers that the generating facilities providing renewable energy be located in Florida.

The issuance of the RFP will follow and expand upon a Standard Offer Contract for all renewable generators to be filed with the Florida Public Service Commission on April 1, 2008.

Producing reliable power and protecting the environment

FPL is committed to increasing its energy purchases from renewable generating facilities. In addition to the RFP and the Standard Offer Contract, the company continues to look for opportunities to incorporate renewable resources into its power generating fleet as evolving technologies become commercially available. The company is developing several projects using solar technologies and is hoping to develop a wind energy project on Hutchinson Island in Florida. In addition, FPL is exploring the use of emerging technologies such as ocean currents, ocean thermal, fuel cells, hydrogen, biofuels and energy storage.

FPL’s affiliate, FPL Energy, is the nation’s leading producer of wind power and operates the world’s largest solar generating facility. Combined, the two subsidiaries of FPL Group operate one of the cleanest generating fleets in the nation with among the lowest emission rates.
