FPL reminds customers never to give callers personal information
January 3, 2008

JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Power & Light Company reminds all customers that the company never calls to demand credit card or bank account information over the telephone. Customers have reported callers threatening that electrical service will be disconnected if this information is not provided immediately over the phone.

“If someone receives a call from a person who claims to be working for FPL asking for personal information, they should never give this information over the phone,” said Marlene Santos, Vice President of Customer Service.  “While FPL representatives sometimes make calls to collect on past due accounts, customers are always given a choice of how to pay.”  For example, customers can pay by credit card or through their bank account.  Either type of payment will be handled by an automated voice response system. No personal information will be provided to another individual on the phone.

If there is any doubt about the identity of a person claiming to represent FPL, customers should call the utility at the number located on the bottom of their bill. If you have already provided a caller with your information, you should contact your bank or credit card company immediately and file a police report.
