Florida Power & Light awards $599,000 to Nova University for participation in energy conservation program
Environmentally-friendly technology burns less fuel, saves college thousands of dollars

DAVIE, Fla. – Florida Power & Light on Friday rewarded Nova Southeastern University with a check for $599,000 for its participation in FPL’s Thermal Storage Energy Program that will save the school a projected $300,000 annually in electricity costs.

Nova discontinued the use of chillers from several campus buildings and replaced them with a high-efficiency central chiller plant. This central chiller plant uses thermal energy storage to replace 1,243 tons of air-conditioning equipment during FPL’s on-peak periods. The thermal energy storage system produces and stores ice at night, when power is less expensive, and uses it to cool buildings efficiently throughout the day, when rates are higher.

The results -- a reduction in on-peak electricity use and lower electricity bills.

“By running the chillers at night, power plant generation is more efficient. Therefore, carbon emissions are also reduced,” says John Nix, FPL’s air-conditioning specialist.

The $599,000 incentive is the second largest awarded by FPL in the state. A condo retirement center in Fort Myers five years ago qualified for a $1.6 million award for using thermal storage.

This is the second FPL thermal storage incentive award Nova has received from FPL. The first award was for more than $200,000, received five years ago.
