Wind generation considered for coastal St. Lucie County
June 7, 2007

JUNO BEACH, Fla. --- Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and St. Lucie County officials announced today their intention to explore building a wind power project near the coastline in St. Lucie County.  Prior to construction, FPL said it would need to address a number of factors, including the suitability of a site, environmental considerations and permitting requirements.

FPL seeks to provide its customers with a mix of renewable energy resources that augment and diversify its existing power generation portfolio. While wind in Florida is not consistently strong and reliable enough to produce a large amount of electricity, FPL will explore ways to best use this resource.  The company will use the expertise from its sister company, FPL Energy (FPLE), the nation's leading owner and operator of wind generated electricity facilities, to explore how wind power can effectively contribute to Florida's energy plan.

St. Lucie County Commissioners have stated their support for renewable energy, including wind, in their county.

"This is a great first step in seeking more renewable generation resources in Florida,” said Armando Olivera, president of FPL. “Adding wind will help diversify our fuel mix and is emissions free," he continued.

FPL Group, the parent of Florida Power & Light, is recognized as a clean energy company and recently joined major businesses and environmental leaders in calling for swift action on global climate change. Renewable energy is one way to minimize green house gas emissions such as carbon dioxide.
