FPL's Energy Encounter presents 'Florida's Mosquito Man' on Wonderful Wednesday
April 6, 2007

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company’s Energy Encounter, located at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant, will feature a presentation on mosquitoes on Wednesday, April 18 at 10 a.m. Dr. George O'Meara, Florida’s foremost expert on mosquitoes, will share his knowledge along with fun facts on these annoying insects at the center’s Wonderful Wednesday program series for adults.

Dr. O’Meara, who resides in Vero Beach, has spent his career at the Florida Medical Entomology Lab as a research scientist and as a professor at the University of Florida. The result of his field and laboratory studies has improved the knowledge of various aspects of mosquito biology and control.

All mosquitoes start their life cycle as eggs, deposited either on or near the water surface. Some species prefer salt or brackish water as found in our local coastal salt marshes while others prefer fresh water derived from rainfall or agricultural irrigation. Mosquitoes are pests that spread diseases such as encephalitis, dog heartworm, dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever and West Nile Virus.

To learn more about mosquitoes, their habits and control methods, attend the April Wonderful Wednesday program.
