JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company customers have helped make the company’s Sunshine Energy® program among the largest residential renewable energy programs in the nation, according to rankings released yesterday by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). As of February, 2007, more than 30,000 FPL residential customers have voluntarily signed up for Sunshine Energy.
The NREL rankings of the nation’s top 10 utility green power programs are determined using 2006 data from more than 600 utilities across the country. NREL ranks the programs in categories such as total sales of renewable energy to program participants and total number of customer participants.
“These utilities are the national leaders,” said Lori Bird, senior energy analyst at NREL. “Utility green power sales continue to show strong growth across the country.”
“FPL wouldn’t have achieved these huge renewable milestones without the support of our customers and their participation in the Sunshine Energy program,” said Marlene Santos, FPL vice president, customer service. “We are delighted that our residential customers show such dedication to clean, renewable power and its positive environmental impact.”
NREL Rankings for FPL’s Sunshine Energy
- Number 3 in sales volume – FPL renewable energy sales volume for 2006 totaled 302,792,000 kilowatt hours of customer usage.
- Number 6 in total customer participation – 28,742 residential customers were enrolled in FPL’s voluntary Sunshine Energy program at the end of 2006, a 23 percent increase over the prior year.
The NREL rankings reflect FPL’s
Sunshine Energyprogram for residential customers. The company will launch a similar program for business customers this month.
NREL’s annual rankings are based on raw numbers and are not adjusted for the size of the utility. The full report can be accessed at www.nrel.gov.
About Sunshine Energy®
Sunshine Energy is a voluntary green power program offered as a choice for FPL residential customers who want to support cleaner, renewable electric generation. FPL does not profit from this program in any way. An important element of the Sunshine Energy program is FPL’s commitment to build or support renewable facilities in the state of Florida. The company pledges to develop solar electric generation projects as customers sign up for the program. More than 30,000 customers are participating in FPL’s Sunshine Energy® program. Since the program started in 2004 through 2006, Sunshine Energy customers have helped avoid over 420 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It would take more than 25 million trees to reduce the same amount of CO2. FPL’s Sunshine Energy® program is ranked No. 3 in the country for sales volume and No. 6 for total customer participation by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for 2006. The program was recognized by the U.S. EPA and DOE as a 2005 Green Power Leadership Award Recipient.
