Environmental Groups Recognize FPL's 'Repowering' Projects, Other Environmental Stewardship Programs In 2001
January 4, 2002

Florida Power & Light Company's Fort Myers and Sanford "repowering" projects recently were recognized by two organizations for contributing to a cleaner environment. FPL's repowering efforts involve more than doubling the energy output of older, oil-burning power plants by converting them to new natural gas-fired generating technology.

The Florida Ocean Alliance recognized both of FPL's repowering projects with awards for significantly reducing air emissions and barge traffic, as well as wise use of existing power plant sites for expansion. The Florida Ocean Alliance is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to bringing together government, academic and private sectors in Florida to protect and enhance Florida's coastal and ocean resources for continued social and economic benefits. Additionally, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection recognized FPL's Fort Myers repowering site, along with two other facilities in the state, for exemplary performance in environmental stewardship as partners in the Air Division's Partnership for Ecosystem Protection Program. PEP partners must be in compliance with environmental regulations, have a good compliance history and implement pollution prevention activities beyond regulatory requirements. More information is available at http://www.dep.state.fl.us/. FPL's Sanford repowering site also is a member of the DEP's PEP program.

"We are very proud to be acknowledged for our efforts in energy management and environmental stewardship," said Randall R LaBauve, FPL director of environmental services.

During 2001, FPL also was the recipient of the Edison Electric Institute's Land Management Award for exemplary integration of environmental stewardship and power plant operations, including its management of wetlands and crocodile habitat at its Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Miami-Dade County. The company additionally won for the third time, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2001 WasteWise "Program Champion Award." WasteWise is a voluntary program that involves businesses, government agencies and others in reducing waste through recycling, waste prevention and buying recycled material. FPL Group, FPL's parent company, also is ranked one of the top environmental electric utilities in the United States by Wall Street investment analyst -- Innovest.

Florida Power & Light Company is the principal subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc. , one of the nation's largest providers of electricity-related services with annual revenues of more than $8 billion.
