Florida Power & Light Company's Web-based information on manatees has earned the utility a StudyWeb® Academic Excellence Award. StudyWeb is a favorite Web site for teachers and students who use the site's educational resources for classroom projects and homework assignments. FPL's contribution appears at StudyWeb in "Science: Life Sciences: Animals & Pets: Ocean Life: Manatees."
"FPL has a long history of supporting education through a variety of community outreach programs, and now increasingly through the Internet," said Mary Lou Kromer, FPL vice president for corporate communications. "We're delighted to be selected by StudyWeb as a featured site for our manatee and other Florida endangered species reports. This kind of recognition helps students and teachers everywhere uncover new educational resources."
Among the manatee offerings at FPL's environmental information site are a report on the West Indian Manatee, a video clip, guidelines for manatee protection and tips for safe boating around manatees. The FPL Web site also offers information on two FPL power plant sites -- one in Fort Myers and one in Riviera, Florida -- where manatee viewing facilities are open to the public. Manatees are attracted to FPL sites on cold winter days where they enjoy the warm-water releases from the electricity-generating plants.
The StudyWeb recognition comes on the heels of recent recognition given to FPL by Andersen Consulting and by EnergyEcomm.com for leading-edge Web activities.
Other popular educational offerings for students at FPL.com can be accessed by visiting the Learning Center, which is one quick link from FPL's home page. At the Learning Center kids can enjoy experiments and interactive games at FPL's Electrical Safety World or test their Energy Smarts with an Energy IQ Quiz, and more.
