February 19, 2001

A delegation of 100 Florida Power & Light crew members traveled to Alabama early Saturday morning to assist in restoring service to 357,000 Alabama Power customers after severe storms, with winds in excess of 100 miles per hour, hit the area.

FPL crews from Brevard, Central and North Florida were one of the first visiting crews to arrive in Birmingham on Saturday evening, followed by additional crews from Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Sarasota. As many as 2,300 line personnel from other states are working on the restoration.

By late Sunday, about 140,000 customers still remained without power. Crews are expected to finish their work later today.

"We have reciprocal agreements with other utilities in the southern U.S. to assist each other in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wind and ice storms," said Armando Olivera, FPL's Senior Vice President of Power Systems. FPL crews most recently assisted Entergy Arkansas in restoring their customers after devastating ice storms.
