Florida Power & Light Company recently launched an animated, kid-approved electricity-safety Web site. Students of all ages can log on to http://www.fplsafetyworld.com/ or click on the safetyworld.com logo on FPL's Web site, which will take them to a whole new world of energy safety.
"FPL Safety World is a cartoon-clad, fun site loaded with experiment ideas, fully animated games and informational presentations aimed at teaching kids about the dangers associated with electric current," said John Paul Venanzi, FPL marketing manager. What is electricity? Where does it come from and how does it travel? These are some of the questions that FPL's newest educational site answers for young web surfers.
"Kids and their parents use electricity to get through everyday tasks and activities. We hope that this site will educate young students on the dangers of electricity and how to stay safe," said John Kitchens, manager of external affairs services at FPL. "FPL's safetyworld.com is also an excellent tool for teachers to use in their classrooms to learn about science and keep the curriculum fresh and interesting."
Animated cartoon games like "find the hidden dangers" help kids find ways to stay safe outdoors, while "make the right choice" tests electrical safety inside the home by presenting electrical hazards and asking students to choose the safe choice. Shock blocker offers young Web surfers a lightning clad version of tic-tac-toe.
FPL offers additional educational activities, which include the Electrifying Experience, an entertaining and educational program on the basics of electricity and electrical safety. FPL also sponsors the state's regional Future City competition, which will begin in September and culminates with final judging on Jan. 20.
