If you're in or headed for a job in information technology, Florida Power & Light Company is rated among the top 10 best companies to work for in terms of diversity and overall among the top 50 "Best Places to Work." This recognition was given to FPL by Computerworld magazine in its annual "100 Best Places to Work" series of articles in June.
"We consider being named among the best and most diverse places to work a real achievement," said Dennis Klinger, FPL vice president for information management. "It means we have the power to think and act differently. It also means we can continue recruiting, confident that our candidates will have an independent basis for judging the quality of work environment we offer."
According to Computerworld magazine, FPL was named to the "Best Places to Work" list on the basis of employee training opportunities, salary and benefits, advancement opportunities, loyalty, and the number of women and minorities in information technology staff and management positions.
In an interview in Computerworld's June 19 issue, FPL's chief information officer explained that diversity is a high priority for the company. "There's a wider selection of people, if you look more broadly," Mr. Klinger said. "It's the right thing to do, and it's also good business."
Among the ways FPL has built workforce diversity and employee value are by:
-- Building a workforce where more than 40 percent of information technology employees, and 30 percent of information technology managers, are minorities
-- Providing mentoring programs and cross-functional teaming to broaden the information technology and business knowledge of employees
-- Combining monetary performance rewards and promotions with employee benefits such as on-site fitness centers and innovative rewards such as extra time off and travel rewards
-- Hiring directly from college with a development program equal to that of many big consulting firms
-- Supporting scholarship and intern programs at minority schools such as Florida A&M University
-- Providing telecommuting options
-- Providing an environment that builds employee loyalty, keeping turnover in information management at about 5.5 percent
-- Providing on-going training, as well as reimbursement for college tuition and technology certification
