As the 2023 hurricane season begins, FPL is prepared and urges customers to prepare
June 1, 2023
FPL’s year-round preparations and ongoing investments to build a more storm-resilient grid helped speed restoration when Hurricane Ian struck as the fourth-strongest storm to ever make landfall in Florida last year.

Less than one year from one of the most destructive hurricane seasons in history, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is preparing for the start of another potentially active hurricane season and reminds customers to do the same.

Why it matters: Today marks the beginning of the 2023 hurricane season. As many Floridians saw last fall, it just takes one storm to cause widespread devastation. FPL prepares throughout the year for hurricane season, conducting extensive training for thousands of employees, planning for when – not if – the next major hurricane could damage the energy grid.

Preparations by the numbers: FPL has implemented a systematic and strategic approach to strengthen its electric grid to reduce restoration costs and customer outage times associated with extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, and improve overall reliability for customers.  FPL has made significant investments to upgrade and harden its electric grid, including…

  • Hardening main power lines that serve critical community facilities and services
  • Installing more than 200,000 intelligent devices along the energy grid to detect and prevent power outages and minimize restoration times when outages occur.
    • These devices helped customers avoid nearly 550,000 outages during the 2022 hurricane season.
  • Placing more neighborhood power lines underground through the Storm Secure Underground Program, which has completed more than 1,200 projects through the end of 2022.

A word from FPL President and CEO Armando Pimentel: “As we enter the 2023 hurricane season, it’s important to recognize that there will be outages when severe weather comes our way. We must also remember the many lessons we learned from Ian and Nicole, with both storms highlighting our unwavering commitment to being there for our customers when they need us most. Just as we’re prepared for the uncertainty of the next few months, we urge customers to prepare as well.”

Remember: No system is hurricane-proof, so customers should take the time now to prepare their homes, businesses and families and finalize their hurricane plans. Visit FPL.com/storm for tips on how you can prepare.

Top-3 preparation tips for customers:
