Start of Cooler Temperatures Signals Best Time To Test, Repair Air Conditioning Duct Leaks
October 11, 2000

Many South Florida homes have leaky air conditioning ducts, which waste energy and cost homeowners money on their electricity bills. The start of cooler temperatures is the best time to test for and repair these costly problems.

Florida Power & Light Company offers a money-saving program to help. After FPL technicians identify leaky ducts or other related problems in a home, customers are eligible for money saving rebates.

"Studies show that seven out of 10 South Florida homes have leaks in the duct system," said FPL's duct test program manager David Bates. "Often, homeowners are unaware of even large leaks that send cool air and money blowing around the rafters."

The Florida Solar Energy Center calls duct leakage "the single largest energy waste in Florida homes."

FPL will conduct a thorough, two-hour test of a home's central air conditioning system for $30 (each additional AC zone system costs $15). FPL technicians identify and measure all leaks and provide a detailed report of recommended repairs and a list of participating independent contractors.

FPL will pay up to $154 per air conditioning unit toward the cost of repairs for a single-family detached home. Incentives also are available for single-family attached and manufactured homes.

"The long-term savings can surpass even the cash incentives," said Mr. Bates. "A leaky duct costs you money each time you turn on your AC. Well- maintained ducts also improve household comfort and indoor air quality."
